The article we chose to expand on is called Man Tortured Pet Hamster By Feeding It Cannabis and Tizer Laced With LSD. It is about a man (with a few other men watching)  who put a hamster in deadly danger by feeding it a cannabis leaf and making it drink Tizer that had a harmful drug in it. His name is Corey Lee Salvatore Destrow. We believe this was very wrong and illegal, so we expanded on the article by making a blog entry.
We wanted to know why Corey did what he did. Specifically, we were asking if he was sober or drunk/on drugs. Still, whatever his reasons were, the reasons would not justify his situation. Corey was cruel and ignorant and did not think of the consequences. We discovered (by researching more) that the man was very drunk while doing this.
We also wanted to ask, why did some of Corey’s friends record it? Did they believe they would get him in trouble? Or was the video going to be fun to watch later? We think that they did it for fun because, in the video, they showed no concern for the hamster and they were laughing. They were also saying “We are going to kill it” and “it’s going nuts.”
The man served eight weeks in prison, payed approximately $530, and is not able to own any type of animal for ten years. We believe that he should have to serve at least one year in prison, be fined at least $2000, and should not be able to own any animal for the rest of his life.
Another dismaying problem the police discovered on their investigation of the man’s house was that there were two neglected dogs and the animals (dogs and hamster) were living in a filthy environment (their cages were covered in feces and stinking of urine).
We were alarmed, devastated, and disturbed of what these men did. The hamster was caged, defenseless, and completely vulnerable. Every animal deserves a life, even if they are not human.
Fortunately, we found out that the hamster (named Mr. Chow) survived and was given to RSPCA. We also discovered that he has been rehomed to more loving owners.
This article has made us realize what can and does happen every day. Although not every day a hamster is abused the way Mr. Chow was, many similar incidents happen that we don’t even know about. We hope that someday the world will be less violent and cruel, and be more positive and tranquil.
